IIT teachers warn of agitation

The faculty members of  IITs have threatened agitattion from March 20 if the Govt. does not soon announce a revised pay scale for them, but have also assured that they will not disrupt the academic session.

According to members of the faculty of these premium institutions, a general fear is looming large that their pay scales may be downgraded along with those for other colleges run by the central government.

"There is fear and uncertainty among IIT teachers about the new pay scale being proposed by the Human Resource  Ministry," said Sunil Pandey, president of the All India IIT Faculty Federation.

"There are rumours that our salaries will be brought at par with what teachers of other engineeringinstitutions get. This is certainly not acceptable to us," Pandey told sources.

"We have approached the government. But they have refused to give us a time frame by which our new pay scales will be notified. If we fail to get a response by March 20, our agitation will begin."

He, however, made it clear that their agitation will not disrupt the academic session. "We are teachers, responsible teachers. We have our demands, and we also know our responsibilities."

The IITs have some 2,500 teachers on their rolls.

The federation has also appealed to President Pratibha Patil, who is also the Visitor of the IITs, apart from the Prime Minister's Office to demand an early notification of their new pay structure.

Since February, teachers at the seven IITs are being made an ad hoc payment, along with their salaries, till their new salary structures are finalised.

The government had constituted a committee under Govardhan Mehta, a former IIM director, to suggest a new salary structure for a host of technical and central government-run institutions.

Apart from IITs, these include the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

The committee's report is with the government.

Some faculty members at the IITs said they would oppose any move that seeks to downgrade their pay structures, saying they were part of one of India's most prestigious institutions.

The seven IITs, which have earned global recognition for the quality of higher technical education, are in New Delhi, MumbaiChennai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Roorkee.

AGITATION AND NOT STOPPING ACADEMIC WORK !! IT IS A LOW VOICE PROTEST TO WHICH GOVT. ALWAYS TURNS A DEAF EAR. SO NOTHING WILL COME OUT OF THIS. PRESENT GOVT IS NOT USED TO YEILD TO 'SATYAGRAH' OR ANY FORM OF SOFT PROTEST.

Mehta Committee report is a ‘top secret’ document of the MHRD. If this falls in the enemy hands the security of the country may be in danger. If Pakistan or China or the terrorists come to know what Govt. of India is going to give to its technical teachers , they may harm the country to a very great extent. The report has to be ‘guraded’ like no less than the terrorist ‘Kasab’. That’s why the top secracy has been maintained on this ‘classified’ document.

It is strange to see how MHRD is behaving for giving 6 cpc to technical techers. They are not willing to pay technical teachers as demanded. It is confirm from reliable sourse that at large MHRD officials has decline the recommendations of Mehta Committee. So what was the point os spending the public money for constituting such committee. We should file RTI to find the amount of expenditure made. What is the status of IIT teachers agitation????? They should attract the media to bring their demands in public. this will cause a real impact in election season.

Nothing will come out with soft agitation, instead of this all faculty of IIT, NIT, IIM, IISC, ISM whose pay revision is under review , must go for one day strike as initial step then go for hard agitation.
AS it seems present governemnt is not in a mode of revising pay structure of heigher technical institutes.
