Arrear released for Punjab University.

The Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.C. Sobti urged the faculty and non-teaching employees of the University to work devotedly for the cause of university and the students with transparency and accountability.

Addressing two separate gatherings of the teachers and non-teaching employees to extend Diwali greetings, Prof. Sobti sought cooperation of the staff in maintaining the top ranking status of the university and work with honesty and sincerity considering their job meant for the service.

Prof. Sobti announced release of arrears to be paid to the teaching and non-teaching employees following the likely release of the grant to the university by the University Grants Commission shortly.  The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sobti had shuttled between Chandigarh and Delhi for five times in the last week to take up the matter of University’s standing legal status with the Union law ministry, and also pursued the matter further with the ministry of human resource and development and finally with the U.G.C. to get the orders issued for the release of funds, considering Panjab University legally as Interstate Body Corporate.  

The Vice-Chancellor announced that with the status of the University as such, there will not be any change in its governance or in the governing and administrative set-up.  The Syndicate and the Senate will have same status as also the other administrative structure of the university at present.

Following the release of funds to the University, the teaching and non-teaching employees will get another instalment of 50 per cent of the arrear of amount revised by the Sixth Pay Commission.  The staff had already got 30 per cent of the arrear earlier.  The ‘C’ category employees will, however, get full amount of arrear due to them.

The retired employees will also be paid full arrear due, the Vice-Chancellor announced.  Pensioners will also get arrear up to 80 per cent, whichever is due.
According to this calculation a Professor will get around Rs. Five lakh, and a reader and associate professor will get between Rs. 2 to 4 lakh, while each lecturer will get between Rs.90,000 to Rs. 1.25 lakh of arrear.

The non-teaching “A” class officers will get between Rs.60,000 to 80,000 while ‘B’ class employees will get between Rs.30,000 to 50,000 as per rules.  The ‘C’ category employees will get full amount of arrear due to them. 

Presidents of teaching and non-teaching staff thanked the Vice-Chancellor highly and appreciated his personal efforts in getting the cumbersome process bear fruit, shuttling from one department to another in a single day.  Professor R.K. Sharma, Senator showered highly praiseful words for Prof. Sobti and said from now onwards the road map of university was going to be changed for the destiny and bright destination of the teachers, non-teachers and students.

The President of the non-teaching employees association of the University Gurdip Sigh also spoke highly of the efforts of Vice-Chancellor in getting the things done so quickly and complimented Prof. Sobti for getting the system work properly which was almost defunct at the time when the V.C. had taken over.

A former Professor S.S. Kumar of botany and Dr. Gurmeet Singh a Senator also complimented and thanked the Vice-Chancellor using praiseful quotes, metaphors and couplets from poetry.  The Panjab University Teachers Association President Dr. Jaspal Kaur Kaang described the day as “a day of prosperity” in the Punjabi way “Aj din bhagan wala aaya ….Vice-Chancelor ne Khushali da boota laaya”.
