TMC unions raise pitch for DA hike
With the Centre committing a bailout package for West Bengal, unions of government employees owing allegiance to the ruling Trinamool Congress have started mounting pressure on the government to revise dearness allowance and hike Durga Puja bonus this year.
The unions will raise their demands during a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the last week of this month, tentatively on August 26.
On Saturday, Banerjee announced that the Centre would sanction West Bengal a bailout package of Rs 21,614 crore, which includes a grant-in-aid of Rs 9, 240 crore.
The two demands of the unions, including those owing allegiance to the Marxists as well, are DA on a par with central government employees and a puja bonus of Rs 3,000.
Every year, the central government announces DA for its employees in January and July according to the price index. State government employees have not yet received the 16 per cent DA already announced by the central government for its employees. And the gap will increase to 23 per cent when the Centre announces another 7 per cent DA this month. The last time the 10 lakh state government employees received 5 per cent DA was in December 2010.
