Maharashtra promises Univ/College teachers to pay arrears in April & May

The state has decided to release Rs.1,526 crore as arrears by the end of May to university teachers who have boycotted the assessment of exam papers until their salaries are raised as per the recommendations of the sixth pay commission.Appealing to college teachers to resume work, higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope made this announcement in the legislative council on Tuesday. He said the state had decided to advance the date of payment from December to May.

“We will start payment from April 20 onwards, in three instalments,” Tope said. The second installment will be disbursed on May 10 and the third on May 31.
“I have even spoken to Sharad Pawar, who assured me the central government will also give its share in May,” the minister said.
Another contentious issue was of those 2,283 teachers who were appointed between 1991 and 2000 and who have not passed the NET/SET exams.
They have been demanding they be given benefits from the time of appointment.
“The Cabinet has decided to give them arrears from the day it took the decision,” Top stated, adding that the government has been extending the deadlines for these teachers to clear the NET/SET exams after the need to clear it was laid down by the University Grants Commission.
According to the state, each teacher stands to gain at least Rs.2 lakh.
