Employees of the Karnataka Government had something to cheer about on Kannada Rajyotsava day as Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday announced a 12.5 per cent hike in their basic salary as interim relief under the Sixth Pay Commission.
Coming into effect from November 1, the revision will benefit employees of local bodies, grant-in-aid educational institutions and non-teaching staff of universities and pensioners too, but will cost the State exchequer by an extra Rs 50 crore per month.
Similar interim relief will also be given to pensioners and family pensioners.

The salary scales of the state government employees were last hiked in 2006, when the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations were implemented. The Sixth Pay Commission was set up in June to examine the demands of the state government staff for raising their salaries on a par with those of Central government employees. The State government staff had recently urged the government to sanction at least 30 per cent hike as immediate relief, claiming that they received 50 per cent less in pay than Central government employees.

The state government staff had claimed that they were the lowest paid government employees compared to those in the neighbouring Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

“I am happy to announce an interim relief of 12.5 per cent to our employees as a Rajyotsava gift. The government will do the actual revision after the Sixth Pay Commission submits its report,” the chief minister told reporters on the sidelines of a get-together organised for the Rajyotsava award recipients at the Banquet Hall of Vidhana Soudha.
